Benefits the ESL students mentioned
Learn new words – try out new words
Meet people (from a different culture), make friends, learn how to build relationships
Get to know the city
Talk about one’s feelings - Express opinions – talk about anything they want, without being evaluated
Become more confident when talking English / (French for Anglophone natives)
Have a discussion in another language – speak outside the classroom
Be corrected by the Anglophone native – be able to laugh about one’s mistakes
Listen to a native speaker and use his/her speech as a model
- Meet someone with similar interests –
Meet motivated learners – to boost one’s own motivation
Get to know art from Québec (Riopelle)
It is easier to talk in small groups

Activities the ESL students suggested
Museum visit:
Take a guided tour
Compare the museum visit to previous ones (in other places)
Suggest one or two activities – (not too many)
Match two to three Francophones with the same number of Anglophones
the picture – object – should have written explanation
learner’s attention should be drawn to specific objects – exhibits
ask each other questions about the exhibits
exercising memory during the activities
The learners discuss what they saw
Correct each other
One Francophone and one Anglophone visit the museum together, then they meet with another pair of students and report to them (in their L2) what they saw.
The native speaker explains, the L2 speaker asks questions
Tell each other what was the most interesting exhibit they saw

Visit the city

Take a guided tour

Visit the vegetable garden (Musée de la Civilation)

Take a city map and invent an interesting tour (example: turn left five times, then turn right five times, and see where you end up)

Take the ferry

Go to a restaurant
